Part 4. Walking through Paul's letter to the Ephesians

17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds.
18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.
19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.
20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!-
21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus,
22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,
23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,
24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. - Ephesians 4:17-24 ESV 

What's the point literally?

Paul speaks to the believers directly here that are more mature in their faith. Because of that maturity, they now have the designated role as an example to the new believers coming up behind them.

What's the point personally?

This passage packs a lot of truth. Essentially, Paul is saying that knowledge alone is not enough. If we're going to talk the talk than we need to also walk it out. How we think of our struggles and desires matter greatly. The futility of thinking that we once had in our old mindset, the way those who don't know Christ think , requires discipline to overcome and not just wishful thinking.  Paul gives us a reminder to put off our old selves, habits and thinking. Putting off is an action. To put off is a verb and a verb is something that you do. Righteousness and holiness go hand in hand with a change in the attitude of our hearts.

By being less self centred (striving after what I want and need regardless of other's needs around me) and being focussed  on how I fit into God's plan--I will become more like Jesus. The result --I will begin to see people as He does and see them in light of the bigger picture.
